“Growing up, I found a link to my ancestors through Asian films and animation. To prevent that line from breaking ever again, I have reinvented an imaginary version of myself. As a consequence of that dream, Riuchi was born.”
As we learn the need to fit in society, there’s a precious part of ourselves that we won’t let shine through. I want to create these performances to question the meaning of everyone true identity. What are the buried treasures left behind while we play the part of being someone else? Through the character of Riuchi, I want to explore my lost roots and discover, deep inside, what could have been if I had chosen other paths. Growing up, to prevent that line from breaking ever again, I have reinvented an imaginary version of myself. As a consequence of that dream, Riuchi was born.
As a circus performer, the difficulty of acquiring certain techniques appeals to me. As a dancer, I perform purely for the aesthetic. My challenge is to find a language that would allow the mix of these two very different art forms. I want to create a new vocabulary in which complex body movements and objects manipulation would be incorporated into dance theory in order to tell a story in which ability will be perceived for its gracefulness only. The movement then becomes fluid, seemingly effortless, focusing on a symbolism of body movement and object manipulation to convey a full story.
THE TALE OF THE ANCIENT LIGHTS
Riuchi’s 2013 first opus “The Tale of The Ancient Lights” toured in more than 10 countries, winning Best Performance and Best Lighting at Galway Fringe Festival 2014, was nominated for Bewley’s Café Theatre “Little Gem” Award at Tiger Dublin Fringe Festival 2014 and was featured on the RTE Today show. The Irish Times has described it as “an intriguing synthesis of technology and a skilled and imaginative performer.”
Riuchi has been the recipient of awards by the Arts Council of Ireland, Cork City Council, the French Embassy, Culture Ireland and recently has been recognized as the prominent Emerging Irish Circus Performer 2016.
